München (Munich) is one of Germany’s top destinations for international Master's students thanks to its world-class universities, research institutes and close industry links. Home to leading institutions such as Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) alongside four other major higher-education institutions, the city offers strong programs in engineering, computer science, business, life sciences and the arts. With around 95 English-taught Master's programs available across these schools, Munich is particularly attractive to students who want high-quality STEM and management degrees alongside active research opportunities.
What makes Munich special is the blend of rigorous academics and immediate access to employers: global corporations (BMW, Siemens, Allianz), a thriving startup scene and excellent research clusters mean internships and graduate roles are within reach during and after study. International students also choose Munich for its high standard of living, rich cultural life—from museums and opera to beer gardens and the annual Oktoberfest—and easy access to the Bavarian Alps for weekends and outdoor sports.

Student culture in Munich is lively and diverse. University clubs, student unions (Studentenwerk) and subject-specific societies host regular lectures, career fairs and social events; expect film nights, language tandems, sports groups and research seminars. The city’s many student-friendly neighborhoods (Maxvorstadt, Schwabing, Glockenbach) are full of cafés, affordable eateries and bars where students gather after classes.
Nightlife ranges from relaxed beer gardens and jazz bars to larger clubs and live-music venues. Sport is a big part of student life—university sports programs and the proximity to lakes and mountains make hiking, skiing and cycling popular weekend activities. International student offices and buddy programs at Munich’s universities provide practical support and a fast way to meet classmates from around the world.
Munich is one of Germany’s most expensive cities for students, so budgeting carefully is important. Typical monthly costs for an international student can be: rent for a room in a shared flat (WG) roughly €500–€800, groceries and basic supplies €200–€300, and utilities/internet often €50–€100 if not included in rent. Public transport is generally covered by a university Semesterticket (see below), but if paid monthly expect around €50–€70 for a regular MVV pass. Student health insurance (public) is about €110–€120 per month for most students. Altogether, a typical monthly budget in Munich is around €1,100–€1,600 depending on lifestyle and housing choices.
Part-time work and internships are common ways to supplement income; Munich’s strong job market also improves full-time employment prospects after graduation. Many students use campus job portals and university career centers to find paid internships and student assistant roles.
